In these days of
Chicken Run and Toy Story 2, cartoon magic (and budgets)
can fly higher than a rocketing squirrel. But the animation in this Who
Framed Roger Rabbit?-style take on the 1960s TV classic is woefully
underprepared to make an impact with either adults who grew up watching the
series or a gang of new, young, bright-eyed fans. In fact, it's the live-action
villains who ultimately save this flick from full pratfall. De Niro, who mocks
his Taxi Driver character quite cleverly in one scene, and Alexander have
enough common sense to not take their careers too seriously and just aim to have
fun with these roles. They hit their marks, as does Jonathan Winters in a cameo.
That and 80-year-old voice-over legend Foray's squirrely tones make this
a-moose-ing tale almost worth checking out. Almost.
